The Tour
We’ll walk from the village green through the Tiger car park, along the ancient path past The Dipperays and its walled garden towards the A259, turning up Friston Hill and left at Upper Street. Here we’ll hear about the Phantom Coach of Friston opposite the medieval Old Forge where the cellars are built using the ribs of old shipwrecks from Birling Gap.
We’ll walk along Upper Street towards the Village green and learn about the White Lady of Friston whose appearances co-incidentally with a strong aroma of lavender.
We’ll then head south up the ancient smugglers track called Went Way where we’ll hear about the ghosts and shipwrecks at Birling Gap and Beachy Head, looking towards Belle Tout lighthouse.
The head back towards the village past the Smugglers Cottage, towards Gilberts Drive which is the ideal spot to hear about the Headless Horseman of East Dean before passing by the church of St Simon’s and St Jude’s where you can find the grave of Parson Darby.
After turning off Gilberts Drive, we’ll finish up back outside the Tiger Inn. The duration of the walk is approximately 90 minutes.

How much does the tour cost?
£15 per person
How long does the tour last?
Our tour takes around 90 minutes and the route is about 1.2 miles long. The tour is a moderate walking pace with frequent stops for the guide to tell you about the local Ghosts & Smuggers.
What is the terrain of the Tour route like?
The tour covers a mixture of terrains. It starts on paths/pavements and then proceeds onto a quiet residential road covered by trees, so light levels are reduced here. After that participants will walk up an uneven, stony, sometimes muddy, country path which is again covered by trees reducing the light levels. The path is on an incline but there will be several stops.
Do people jump out on the Tour?
Definately not.
Can I bring my Dog?
Regrettably as much as we like dogs, only assistance dogs are allowed on the Tours.
Is the Tour suitable for children?
We suggest the tour is not suitable for children under the age of 14, as the themes covered and the descriptions are of an adult nature.
However, this is merely a recommendation and we leave it to parental discretion as to whether you think the thour and its themes are suitable for your children.
Anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult, who is responsible for the child’s good behaviour.
Are there any toilets along the route?
There are no public toilets on the route. We therefore ask that participants attend to all toiletry needs before commencing the tour.
Do you stop off at any Pubs on the Tour?
We do not stop off at any pubs during the Tour. There is however a pub near to the start/finish of the Tour, and there are other food & drink establishments in the vicinity.
What happens if it rains?
The Tour may be cancelled in the even of inclement weather as the trail can become muddy & slippery. Should this happen we will let you know as soon as possible, and offer you the opportunity to transfer to another date or provide a refund.
What is your cancellation policy?
You cancel MORE than 24 hours before the start time of your tour – Please email us at [email protected] advising you wish to cancel your place on the tour. Provided you have given a minimum of 24 hours’ notice before your designated tour start time, we will refund the cost of your ticket less the processing charge that is charged to us by the payment provider. If you wish to reschedule, we will be happy to transfer your booking to an alternative date instead of issuing a refund.
You cancel LESS than 24 hours before the start time of your tour – Please email us at [email protected] advising you wish to cancel your place on the tour. If you cancel less than 24 hours before your designated tour start time, we will issue a credit note which you can be use at a future date.
We will not make any refund or issue a credit note should you simply fail to turn up or arrive late for your tour.

What other important information should I know?
- Please dress approipriately for the conditions.
- Ensure you bring some warm clothing – Whilst the tours take place all year round, the temperatures do drop even in the early/mid Summer, so please ensure you have some warm clothing in case you get chilly.
- Sturdy footwear is a must – part of the tour route is on the a country path and the South Downs, so sturdy footwear is a must. So please leave the flip flops at home!
- Bottle of water – Summer evenings may still bne warm, so carrying a bottle of warter is a good idea.
- Be aware of the weather forecast – By being aware of the weather forecast for the day of your tour, you can dress accordingly and still get the maximum enjoyment from the tour.
How to Find Us
The East Dean Council Public Car Park is the starting point for The Tours, and the what three words location of the car park is //coder.proves.deposits.
The car park is conveniently located in the heart of East Dean near the Village Green & the Tiger Inn Pub.
Getting there by Car
From Eastbourne, take the A259 westward for about four miles. Upon entering East Dean, follow the signs to the village green, where the car park is clearly marked. It’s an easy drive and well-signposted from the main road.
Getting there by Bus
Bus route 12/12A runs regularly between Eastbourne and Brighton, stopping at East Dean. The bus stop is a short walk from the car park.
Getting there by Train
The nearest train station is in Eastbourne. From there, take bus 12/12A or a taxi to reach East Dean, a journey of about 15 minutes.
